My art consists of sketches and watercolors drawn from scenes in my daily life. I use a Moleskine notebook or another sketchbook to capture what I see, and then I scan the page and upload it to my blog: www.billfulton.net.
I find that sketching helps me “see” my surroundings better. I experience the scene more deeply and I’m able to be present more fully. I appreciate what Teilhard de Chardin wrote: “Nothing here below is profane for those who know how to see. On the contrary, everything is sacred.” As an Episcopal priest, I see art and spirituality as closely connected.
My art is usually not framed or presented in a permanent fashion. I think of it as Postmodern in this sense. What we see and experience is ephemeral; it comes and goes, and we experience it as fully as we can, then we let it go and see what comes next.
I carry a small watercolor palette with me wherever I go so I can sit down and paint a scene anytime. I also enjoy pencil sketches and ink drawings. My goal is to paint watercolors with excellence.
